  3.                   NFS 4.1 Enhancements -- Statement of Intent

  7. The Information Networks Division received formal signoff on Friday,
  8. December 6th to proceed with the development of a set of enhancements
  9. for NFS.  These set of enhancements will include much demanded NFS 4.1
  10. functionality and performance enhancements.
  11.  
  12. IND's plans include making the enhanced version of NFS available for
  13. our Customers with HP/UX 9.0, currently scheduled for Summer of 1992,
  14. and HP/UX 8.3, also currently scheduled for Summer of 1992.  With these
  15. two releases, the enhanced NFS will be available for all HP/UX systems;
  16. Series 8xx, 7xx, 3xx and 4xx.

  18. Enhancement Set Detail:
  19. ------------------------

  21. In more detail, IND commits to providing the following enhancments:

  23. From SUN's NFS 4.1:
  24.  
  25. FOR HP/UX 9.0 and 8.3
  26. ---------------------
  27.  
  28. Export of Root:  Allows the NFS server to export Root capability to NFS
  29. clients
  30.  
  31. Export Read-Only:  Allows the NFS server to export Read-only capability
  32. on a file or directory to the client.
  33.  
  34. Directory Exports:  Allows the NFS server to export individual
  35. directories and subdirectories to a client, instead of forcing exports
  36. to take place at the file system level only.
  37.  
  38. Automounter:  {Automounter is currently available with 8.07 for the
  39. series 7xx} Automounter is a program which allows NFS mounts to occur
  40. dynamically for ease of administration.  When the client user or
  41. application attempts to access an NFS remote file, the mount is
  42. automatically established, and times out after a certain inactive time
  43. limit occurs, thus eliminating unused mount points and stale file
  44. handles.
  45.  
  46. Updates:  With NFS 4.1 the following features have been updated:
  47.        rpcinfo
  48.        showmount
  49.        NFSstat
  50. We will incorporate these updates into our NFS with HP/UX 9.0 and 8.3.

  52. Additional Enhanced Functionality:
  53. ----------------------------------

  55. In addition to the above enhancements, we will be adding in the
  56. following mount command options for HP/UX 8.3.  We are investigating
  57. adding these to 9.0 as well, but cannot commit to that today.

  62. Opportunities we are Investigating:   *not committed*

  65. We are also investigating updating rpcgen and pc-nfsd to the 4.1
  66. versions, however, we cannot commit to this at this time.  If there is
  67. sufficient need, we will aggressively attempt to get the updates into
  68. the releases.

  70. What we are Definately NOT Doing:
  71. ---------------------------------

  73. The following 4.1 functionality is NOT planned from HP:
  74.  
  75. Secure RPC:  HP is committing to Kerberos as our strategic security
  76. solution
  77.  
  78. POSIX Pathconf Support
  79.  
  80. Dynamic Retransmission:  We are currently investigating performance
  81. enhancements for dynamic read and write sizes.  Sun's implementation of
  82. Dynamic Retransmission was pulled from NFS 4.1 due to bugs.
  83.  
  84. NetDisc:  DUX is our current diskless solution
  85.  
  86. Revised Lock Manager:  HP has their own version of lock manager
  87.  
  88. New version of NIS in NFS 4.1:  HP has added much value-added
  89. performance enhancments in NIS.  These performance enhancements are not
  90. found in NFS 4.1 from SUN.

  92. SUMMARY:

  95. HP has committed to providing the highly-requested features found in
  96. NFS 4.1; Directory exports, export of Root, Read-only exports and
  97. Automounter.  We will be adding these to HP/UX 9.0 and 8.3.
